A Brief History of "HALLELUJAH" & Who We Are

"HALLELUJAH"  is a 72ft/40ton classic Perahu Lambo, that I Captain/Dr Hugo, designed and built with the world famous Bugis boat builders in 1983 on a tiny remote island in the Flores Sea south of Southern Sulawesi in Eastern Indonesia.

Constructed entirely by hand - without power tools or electricity - from the strongest native hardwood (superior to teak) to maximum specifications for ultimate strength and durability, she took about a year to build and was launched in early '84.

On her maiden voyage with only two of us aboard - myself and a Bajo Sea Gypsy friend - we sailed 1,500 nautical miles across the Java and South China Seas (with no engine!) to reach Singapore in 37 days.

For the next 21 years she became our live-aboard cruising home as we, (Joanna, my Teochew wife and I) sailed throughout the islands of the Indonesian Archipelago, South China Sea, Singapore, Malacca Straits, East and West Malaysia and across the Andaman Sea to Krabi & Phuket in Southern Thailand as far as the Burmese border - a total distance of around 25,000 nautical miles.

For many years we specialized in international week-long, island-hopping cruises for back-packers travelling between Thailand (Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga Bay, Phi Phi etc) and Langkawi Island in Northwest Malaysia. Adventure, seamanship, sailing, learning navigation, watching sunsets and sunrises at sea, were all special experiences so many thoroughly enjoyed.

Plus swimming in crystal clear coral gardens of national marine parks, snorkeling, diving, exploring uninhabited islands, game fishing, tuna trolling for the "freshest sushi in the world," wild bonfires on the beach, spotting jumping sail fish, gliding flying fish, skipping long toms, whales and dolphins, phosphorescent algae, and spotlight squid scooping! And of course, the parties on board under the cool tropical skies full of shooting stars! Sharing this lifestyle with others turned so many dreams into reality creating memories to treasure for a lifetime.

For over 25 years, we have been based in Langkawi where  "HALLELUJAH" is registered under the Malaysian flag. In survey, with full safety equipment aboard, she is by all accounts an extremely strong, safe and stable vessel.

Cruising the region for 30 years and having established our own Langkawi Marine Charter & Services Company over two decades ago, we continue to operate, upgrade and maintain our beloved  "HALLELUJAH" to high, legal & reliable standards.
